The Paris attacks last week left me feeling sad and angry, especially for my friends there. But what troubled me more was the reaction online. Social media quickly became a battleground, with heated debates on everything from the refugee crisis to holiday cups.
I’ve caught myself getting upset and wanting to fire back with a “righteous” response, but my wife often reminds me to pause: “Breathe out, Ross – talk to God first.”
Before reacting online, we should ask ourselves:
- What’s your goal with your post? Proverbs 12:18 says reckless words can harm, while wise words bring healing. Let’s seek to offer support, not belittle others.
- Should you unfollow or unfriend people who upset you? If social media is affecting your emotional health, it’s okay to step away from negative sources.
- Have you engaged with what you’re about to share? Take time to read or watch before sharing. Stand by the content you post.
- How will your activity reflect on other Christians? Our online actions represent us all. Be mindful of how your words impact others, especially non-believers.
Social media is a digital town square. Let’s aim to be good neighbors online, reflecting Christ’s love in how we engage.
