3 Ways to Care for Your Depressed Friend

Depression is a unique, terrifying experience that can feel like drowning in an abyss. For Christians, it often includes spiraling downward while also feeling guilty for not overcoming it through prayer or faith. When supporting a friend or loved one with depression, presence, care, and patience are essential.

  1. Presence: Rather than offering solutions or advice, just be there for your friend. Sit with them, offer comfort, and ask, “How is today?” rather than the more general “How are you?”
  2. Care for physical needs: Depression affects the body, not just the mind. Bringing a meal or inviting your friend to join you for a simple activity like a walk can help.
  3. Patience: Understand that a depressed person might be difficult to be around. Social interactions can feel impossible for them, and they may withdraw. Remind them gently that they are loved, even in their moments of inactivity.

Loving a depressed person can be exhausting and draining, so it’s important for the caregiver to also have a support system. Grace for yourself is necessary, and you should lean on your own trusted friends for emotional support.

While depression may make it hard to feel God’s presence, the author found God’s love through others, like a husband and friends. God’s presence is often felt through the love and care of people around us.
